Moving Forward

As I was talking to a friend of mine this week, she said something so profound that I had to ask her to repeat it so that I could write it down.

“I don’t want to go back to where I used to be, so why am I not chasing what’s ahead?” – LizC

Even as I type these words again, I’m hit by their depth. Often times, we can find ourselves feeling stuck between who we once were and the person we feel God is calling us to be. For one reason or another we fail to take steps forward and so we risk taking steps back. I don’t know about you, but returning to my past life is definitely not an option! I can’t be “that girl” again. I’ve come too far only to succumb to those bad habits and reckless life decisions once more. That being said, if I was truly adamant about not returning to my old ways wouldn’t I be doing all that I could to grab hold of the new? Ouch, the truth hurts.

Let’s be honest, sometimes going out the club seems a lot more appealing than church. And at times, feeling sexy does a whole lot more for your self-esteem than dressing modestly. The thrill of going on a date with that guy you’ve been messaging on Tinder, sounds a lot more exciting than staying home and praying for your future husband. A little too real? Please understand that I’m not here to condemn you. I’ve been there before and I know what it’s like and how hard it is to give that life up. I’m all too familiar with the feelings of guilt and shame that wash over you the second you’ve had your fun. I know what’s it’s like to feel dirty, unworthy, broken, disgusting, ugly, disqualified…

I also know what it’s like to feel redeemed, forgiven, righteous, unconditionally loved and made new. As difficult as my journey has been, I can assure you that a life centred around self-gratification and trying to please this world pales in comparison to a life spent pursuing God’s very best. So what’s stopping you? Maybe it’s the same thing that hinders me: the unknown. It’s scary to let go of what you know in exchange for uncertainty. But is it really all that uncertain?

Jeremiah 29:11 reads, “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” This verse says it all. God has a plan for each and every one of our lives and it’s a really good plan! So what do we have to lose? Sure, we may not know exactly what the plan entails. And, He doesn’t promise that the process will be easy but He does say that it’ll be good. So don’t be afraid to let go because you’re only holding yourself back. Trust in His plan, though it may be unseen. Boldly chase what lies ahead.
